For a work assignment, I had to watch “The Talk,” a new campaign video Procter & Gamble recently released as part of its My Black is Beautiful campaign. The video is a little over 2 minutes and shows black mothers talking to their children about the unfair bias they will experience in society just because of the color of their skin. Surprisingly, I felt myself get a little emotional as I watched the scenes which ranged from a mother telling her daughter not to accept being told she looks pretty for a black girl as a compliment, to another mother making sure her son has his ID before leaving the house “just in case.”
Interestingly, all major contributors to the campaign including were guided by people of color, which is commendable as they are the only ones who can really identify and fully communicate the disparities faced by people of color.
Click on the video below to watch it. It’s unbelievable powerful, no matter what your race is. As part of the campaign, everyone is encouraged to #TalkAboutBias on social media.
