So, I am a product junkie, which means every week I put my hair through quite a bit. I have a whole box of hair products I’ve accumulated and feel I need to try every single one of them, and as a result by the end of the week I have a ton of product buildup. I recently decided to try a new brand I have been hoarding within my arsenal of products called Unwash. The premise of the brand revolves around challenging the traditional notion that you have to shampoo, condition, and repeat. Instead, a variety of interchangeable products are offered that allow you to remove dirt and build-up, while locking in moisture, without actually cleansing your hair. Yep, take that look off your face and let me explain.
The products were developed to meet the growing demand of co-wash. If you’re a curly girl like me, you know this term all too well – it’s when we skip the shampoo and only wash our hair with conditioner out of the fear that shampoo will rid our hair of the natural oils that keep our curls looking fabulous. Hair cleansers in the line gently remove dirt while sealing in natural oils, so it’s like using a shampoo and conditioner in one, cutting your time in the shower in half.
Here are the products I tested:
Anti-Residue Cleanse – Referred to as a “reset button for hair that may feel weighed down,” this sulfate-free mild cleaner is pH-balanced and aims to remove build-up without stripping away natural oils and moisture. It contains coconut, babassu and moringa oleifera seed oils. After lathering this product into my hair (it smells oh so soft and floral), I rinsed out my hair, and then reached to grab the bottle for another round of washing to make sure my hair was super clean. But, as I was about to pour more product over my hair I ran my fingers through my curls and my hair felt weird, but in a good way. It felt clean, so another rinse wasn’t necessary.
Hydrating Masque – This treatment contains organic argan oil and hydrolyzed quinoa to smooth hair, reduce frizz and add shine. The instructions say to leave it in for 3-5 minutes, but I always feel my hair needs some extra TLC, so I left it in for 10 minutes as I did chores around the house. After I rinsed it out my hair felt soft and moisturized.
I’m excited to keep “unwashing” my hair to get rid of buildup, while gaining soft-to-the-touch curls. Will you give this brand a try? Learn more on their website.
